IT'S A SILENT HILL THREAD, OKAY GO.

I never said The Room was a bad game, I just think it would have been better if Konami had just stayed the course with it instead of trying to jam it into the SH franchise, where it looks like the uncomfortable odd one out at the family get-together. The vague tie-ins with the rest of the series just so it would be a Silent Hill game cheapened it a bit, in my humble opinion.

Personally, 3 was my favorite. 4 was okay, just not the best one.

Pic related, it's the Silent Hill 1 map for the first Left4Dead. If you've got a graphics card that can handle high settings, you can capture some really cool pictures in there.

SH2 was my favorite. Amazing writing, amazing everything.
SH3 was second. I loved Heather and the whole game, but oh my god, the voice acting for Vincent and Douglas is fucking laughable.
The Room wasn't horrible, entertaining enough. Didn't grow very attached to Henry.
I hated Homecoming, Alex pissed me off to no end (Have you seen a little boy, short, black hair? I haven't come to terms with the fact that I murdered him?) Also the inclusion of Pyramid Head in Homecoming is fucking irredeemable. Fanservice is not an excuse for shit writing.
Didn't play Origins myself. Travis looked like he would get on your nerves. Also again, the Butcher. Thinly veiled Pyramid Head stand-in. Knock that shit off.
Shattered Memories had good imagery and decent writing and everything, but the game itself was utter shit. No combat made for no fucking fun whatsoever. Running is not fun. It does not make for a good game. It makes for a lot of profanity and Wiimote flailing.
Also nothing was frightening at all, just frustrating. Nothing gave me a scare. All that game did was make me angry.
New game looks okay. Murphy looks derp as hell, but hey, I don't know what he's like yet. Also Jame's voice actor was contacted by Konami towards the end of the game's production. I smell SH@-related plot twist,

Excuse the wall of text.

>Nothing gave me a scare. All that game did was make me angry.

I agree with that statement about Shattered Memories. There were points when it WANTED to be scary and I wished so badly it would have PUSHED it a bit more. They missed a great scare in the art room in the school with the manniquin posed on the little stage. After you solve the puzzle by calling the number, a voice tells you the door is open and it creaks open, but they could have removed or moved the manniquin and gone for total mindfuckery.

Ahhhhrghh. It had so much potential! The idea that the evil of Silent Hill twists itself into your own perception of hell is marvelous. (A homage to SH2 in a way) But it got bogged down by such silly things in the end.

>Pyramid Head in Homecoming is fucking irredeemable.

Yeah. That was...I dunno? I remember having that same annoyance at the movie. Homecoming had a lot of aspects I liked, though. The gameplay and combat for one was interesting and I sort of enoyed the transition from killing 'mindless' monsters to intelligent humans, but I dunno. The whole cult thing has been overused archetype in SH.

I hope the new one sort of wipes the slate clean and tries not to include the cult. The gods of the town are evil and twisted enough...It doesn't need a cult of worshippers. It can just EXIST on it's own as an identity. SH2 didn't have much of the cult in it and I think that's what made it so good.

TL:DR; I am a huge dork for SH. The end.

It was just the town itself, feeding off James' memories.

I also find the blatant fanservice by including PH in just about every thing to be annoying as all hell.
I'm very VERY Iffy about SH8, take away my cult? I can deal. Take away my fog? It's strange but I can live. Take away Akira Yamaoka? Then it's mother fucking Game On.
Murphy could be an interesting character, but he's got to prove himself. I'm not one to start orgasming over a character before playing them. But I'll admit the electric Silent Hill has me very interested.

Harry, Heather and James each lived up to their full SH mind fucking potential. Harry was relativly bland, but Walter kept me around as he was an ineresting antagonist.

You mean Henry.

Me and my bro always fuck that up. What will we do if they ever have a character named Jerry?

There was a pretty damn funny video circulating of Henry reacting to everything with rage. Tourettes Henry is what it was called I think. It fit more properly than him saying "What the hell . . .?" every ten minutes, at least.

I felt bad for Henry. The dude was like 'Yeah, finally got a rent free apartment and there's a ghost haunting the fuck out of it. DAMN MAN. Do you know how hard it is to get a 1 bed 1 bath in the city rent free?!'

I would love to dub over Henrys bland VO with Brad from 4pp: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W-DptWf5Z4o

I've played every game except for Homecoming, so I can't speak for that one. I have not yet played a Silent Hill game that I did not FUCKING LOVE in one way or another. SH2 and SHSM are my favorites, but goddamn, I always have fun with the others as well, and they always managed to be scary, even if it wasn't all the time. All of them. ALL OF THEM. I just fucking love how they all explore the various ways people do or don't deal with horrible, crippling loss: Harry goes Papa Wolf, James goes nuts, Heather goes on a roaring rampage of revenge, Walter becomes the most sympathetic serial killer I've ever encountered in fiction, Travis bottles it up, and there's nothing I can say about SHSM that isn't a spoiler. And the CREATURES...ye gods. This series. This wonderful, wonderful series.
tl;dr I LOVE SILENT HILL BOOM DE YADA BOOM DE YADA

I'm not devastated by Akira Yamaoka's departure. Disappointed and apprehensive regarding Daniel Licht, but not devastated. Surely Yamaoka isn't the only person on the face of the Earth capable of composing an awesome, atmospheric score. This is not the death of Silent Hill.

Heard news on new game.

Them isn't electricity/machinery like I was led to believe. It's water. New game's called Silent Hill: Downpour.
Don't know how I feel about that. I'd rather they stay away from using themes. The ice theme from Shattered Memories didn't do shit to scare me. The rest did a good job on the whole 'rotting metal meat hell filled with fleshy walls and rusty grates' thing. Maybe using that too often is tedious for some? I don't know. Ice just wasn't as terrifying as the developers thought it would be.
They are using the plainer south eastern part of the Silent Hill map, which means no more schools and hospitals. That's risky, but if they come up with something good, I guess more power to them. Trying new things is good as long as you can pull it off.
Biggest thing is, no weapon inventory. Meaning that you can only carry one weapon, and eventually that weapon will break. This is a big fuck up. They need to realize that the best sort of combat was in SH2 and SH3. They piled it on heavy in Origins and Homecoming, then took it away completely in Shattered Memories. Both terrible ideas. They do not inspire fear in the players, only total fucking frustration.

Anyway, this is totally irrelevant until the thing comes out, so whatever.

No Akira Yamaoka = not really interested. Can't wait to see his work on Shadows of the Damned though.

oh i guess since this isn't here i might as well leave it (and revive the thread)

EGM digital magazine got to sit down with the producer of Silent Hill: Downpour, Devin Shatsky. He lets loose some information about their new horror game.

There will be multiple endings in the game

Won’t be able to play all of the side-quests in one playthrough

Devin Shatsky prefers to call Downpour a Psychological Thriller rather than a Survival Horror game

Use a subway system to get around town

The team has made several walk cycles based on whether Murphy (main character) has been attacked, near something scary, or just in the dark

The biggest goal for the team is to create a feeling of unreliability in the game (never-ending hallways, disappearing rooms)

Pyramid Head will not be in this game

Breakable weapons see a return

i guess the main point of all this is that there will be no fucking pyramid head, which is probably the best part of it

I have never been happier. Thank fucking god.
I was almost certain he would be with all that Murphy=James speculation.
