I'm lookin' fer a right proper crew ta' sail the seven seas with me, pillaging and puzzling as we go! I've looted the carcass of the years-old ship owned by TF2chan's previous crew, The Salty Seamen, and have a decent startup fund ready to go on the Sage server, about 20k PoE and 4 dubloons. If you've been interested in Puzzle Pirates, now is pretty much the best possible time to be joining up and trying it out, as it's free to play on Steam! If you're interested, drop a line here or hit me up on steam and I'll see about getting you into the game and having some fun!

Currently, there is no official crew yet because I need to practice with my brand new Steam account pirate, so the first goal is to practice our puzzling skills and earn ourselves some money and dubloons. If everyone wishes, we can play on a different server than Sage, but I won't be able to contribute my past pirate's funds to our cause if we do. Either way, let's have some fun!

if i'm on the hunter ocean, do i lose all my shit if i change?

Unfortunately yes unless you paid for a character transfer or something. I actually haven't checked how that system has changed since I last played years back, maybe it's a free thing now. Regardless of that, you'd either have to move the character over or make a new one if we play on Sage. If there's enough other people wanting to stay on Hunter though, I'm okay with that.

Me, Kuhzka, and Ashe! are on Sage and I think there are a few other people too, so I'd want to stay there. But in case we do switch... well, we should try to make that decision sooner rather than later because I wouldn't mind changing right now- I've barely just started the game- but it'd be a bit annoying to switch servers if I end up getting further in the game just to find out all the cool kids are on Hunter.

Also: I just started playing this game. AMAZING. I love teamwork games. I love puzzle games. With their forces combined... anything can happen.

I don't play much but I'll join ya! I forget what ocean I'm in. Also, I played then got it on steam. Apparently I can't have my same char on my steam. Kinda disappointed but whatever :)

It looks pretty solid that we're going to be staying on the Sage ocean, sorry for that Hydra. On the plus side, with a few incredibly lucky pillages that I, Greenstor, and Kuhzka found, we have at least enough money to commission the group's first ship, and I've managed to build my pirate's experience up enough that we're almost eligible to make the crew. Currently there's still a lot of practicing to be done at all of our favourite puzzles, and possibly some more recruiting of members such that we have enough to man our ship, so Eudevie has been kind enough to resurrect the Steam Group! http://steamcommunity.com/groups/SaltySeamensFagboat
The Salty Seamen shall sail the seven seas again! That is, assuming we'd like to keep the name.

I think our next major objective as a group should be to determine whether or not we want to recreate the Salty Seamen, since I disbanded the crew in-game, or give our new collective a different name. Throw some suggestions out here, or post them on the Steam Group page!

Lastly, I'd like to take a quick stock of how much in-game money everyone has that they're up for donating towards the group fund. I myself have completely vacated my old pirate of years past, and my current Steam pirate, Ashanos, now sits at about 41k Pieces of Eight, and 4 Dubloons. For reference, a Dubloon costs approximately 1.7k Pieces of Eight, and to create our crew we need 35 of them in addition to a ship's deed. This shouldn't take too long if we pool together, but let's take a count anyway! Post however much you're willing to donate to the group, and I'll do my best to come around and collect so that we can get this party started!

If you've jobbed on a ship and fought against some brigands or barbarians, you've most likely seen either the captain or some other crew member bitching constantly either before or during a battle about "fixing your teams" or something related. I'm here to explain quickly and simply what this seemingly nonsense spam is all about.

Teaming up on a bot, in a team of 3, is the quickest way to take one down if all three fighters are of average skill. If they're above average, two will suffice. The real reason for shouting about breaking up groups of four or more into smaller teams is because bots cheat.

That's right, bots are dirty rotten cheating sons of bitches who would like nothing more than some unwitting players to activate their SPECIAL CHEATING MODE, wherein they will start pulling off unbelievably powerful attacks such as the one pictured. If a bot has more than three people teamed up on it for a good period of time, it will first stall for time like a player would by not touching the spacebar or down arrow to drop pieces faster. If the team isn't broken or at the very least switched up after a certain point, the bot will activate CHEATING MODE and completely kick the ass of the poor pirate under their target. If you break the team down into 3 or less, you can avoid this grisly fate.

The reason for this mode is because of the fact that in the early days of the game, players learned quickly that if they all teamed up on the same bot, it would die incredibly fast, allowing small groups of players to take down massive bot hordes with relative ease. The game designers changed the bot AI around a few times before regretfully deciding to give the bots this hidden power, as their only line of defense against a far superior intellect, the human mind. This is the reason we keep our teams small, and drill it into our fellow pirates' minds from day one. This is what we seek to prevent. This is teaming, and it's here to stay.

(On a side note, if you happen to fight in a PvP Swordfight or Rumble, you can pretty much disregard these rules and all pile on the single most valuable player they have. Just hope that your enemies don't do the same to you!)

When you play puzzles on a ship, you get a rank in the Duty Report listed at each league point or island your ship stops at, as well as before and after each ship battle. These scores go from Booched to Incredible, and are based on your performance at the puzzle. Bear with me now, because this is where things get confusing.

Your actual score at the puzzle is based on how well you are doing compared to everyone else playing the puzzle on the server, if not the whole game. (I'm still not sure which of the two it is.) This means that if the only people playing the puzzle are you doing good and someone else who is doing terrible, you'd have a sparkly gold indicator so long as you are doing better than them, and you'd get Duty Reports of Excellent and Incredible easily. The indicator itself can fluctuate from brown and static to sparkling gold and frenetic movements, to show you your current relative score. Of course, this rarely will ever happen, and the usual scenario is that hundreds, if not thousands of other pirates are playing the puzzle at the same time as you. Don't get discouraged if you're doing poorly one day when you were doing well beforehand, because your score is directly determined by how everyone else is performing. Your scoring is also modified by how many stars are off to the side of your puzzle; as the stars increase, so too does the difficulty of the puzzle and the points you score from doing it.

Essentially what this means is that there is an element of randomness to your effect at any puzzle, in addition to a flat bonus for simply playing it often. Maybe the best players are having a bad day, and this raises you in the relative standings, or maybe some of the worst players are having a good day and lowering your effectiveness. Maybe you only have four stars at a puzzle because you haven't played it very often, or maybe it's your favourite puzzle and you're up to a whopping nine stars! Either way, the best way to keep a consistent effect is to keep on practicing, stick to your favourites, and don't let a bad day discourage you from having fun! So long as you're not getting a ranking of Booched (which is almost impossible to get without sitting around on the puzzle and doing nothing), you're still a valuable contributor to your crew, and I'd be proud to sail with ye any day.

Thanks for the tips; there were a lot of things I was unsure about so these were a lot of help!

Also, I have around 12k PoE now and would be willing to donate it all for the ship, haha. I already purchased clothes and ragequit when I figured out you needed doubloons to get 'em delivered.

I have exactly what you need right here.

GUIDE TO BUYING THINGS LIKE CLOTHES AND SWORDS:
Ask in pubs or try to find a shop owner that you can contact to buy things from them directly. Most shop owners will have a clothes rack, or some other rack in their store to display prefabricated items they sell. You can get discounted items that require no dubloons this way, at the cost of them having less days remaining on them for use.

I'm hella rusty but I'm in. I don't quite remember my account name or anything, but I'm pretty sure I was in Sage. If I get any spare PoE, I'll gladly donate it to a mighty vessel that will no doubt murder the living shit out of everyone else.
>> No. 1553
The money situation is almost completely resolved: I have enough dubloons to start the crew, and almost enough PoE leftover to buy a ship. The main issue that we have to deal with now is as follows:

What kind of ship do we want to sail on?

We could always take the cheapest option, a Sloop, but if we wait a little longer and keep saving up, we could easily start out instead with a Cutter or Dhow. A Cutter has the advantage of being overall better than a Sloop in terms of available stations, the amount of pirates we can have on board, the amount of cargo we can carry, and the amount of guns available for firing. On the other hand, a Dhow holds less cargo than a Cutter, and trades having numerous guns for more powerful ones. I personally think we should get a Cutter instead of a Dhow, but I'll leave that up to you. More information about the ships in the game can be found on YPPedia, and the most useful table is here: http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Ship#Capacity

After we have a ship and the crew is created, there are two other things that we will need to decide upon before any pillaging can take place.

What style of governance should we use?
What booty share style should we use?

For governance, I ask simply because I might not be able to be online at all times, so we can either put faith in my abilities to deal with the larger issues with an Autocratic system, or we can leave the important issues up to a vote with the Oligarchic. For booty shares, there is a chart on YPPedia ( http://yppedia.puzzlepirates.com/Booty_shares ) that shows all the different methods of splitting up our loot after pillages, as well as an explanation of how it all works. I favour The Cruel Shelf, personally, since this means that our highest officers will get the highest shares, due to the fact that they will be spending some of their money to restock the ship(s) in our fleet after a pillage. If the popular vote is for something else, we can also adjust the Ship Restocking percentage and make things easier for everyone in this manner.

In other news, all I need now to actually start the crew is more in-game experience in Swordfighting, so anyone who wants to duel with me is more than welcome to, and I'd appreciate it. I would very much appreciate if people would let their voices be heard on these issues if you have opinions, be they for or against my plan. It just doesn't feel right going through with things and not having approval from the people it will directly affect.

The Cruel Shelf is fine by me.

How do you find a crew to join it? Or a specific person? I don't remember a lot, I hadn't played in awhile.
>> No. 1557
>>1556
You can type /who X where X is the name of the person to find their profile. If you know they're online at the moment, send them a tell with the Tell function of the chat bar. Click on the box that says Speak to change what chatting mode you're in, switch to Tell or Whisper, and put their name in the left box. Then send your message using the right box. To make friends with another pirate, click on them when you are standing in the same scene as them, and select the Add to Hearties option with the heart icon.

So it seems that the entire crew has almost simultaneously stopped playing or caring about the game. I'm not going to start the crew up until I damn well see that there's a reason for it, and with nobody playing any more there is none. I have made an announcement on the steamgroup, but you are more than welcome to voice your opinions or just say "I'M NOT DEAD AND WILL STILL PLAY" in some variation here.
>> No. 1569
I'm still here. I play about an hour or so a day.

Question: Is there any way to get around the doubloon pickup fee when buy a ship?
>> No. 1570
>>1569
Only by buying a pre-made ship from someone. Generally then it costs far more in PoE, but unlike the way I saw it happening about two years ago, people seem to still be asking for the same amount of dubloons in exchange for maybe one or two grand off the PoE price.

i'm done playing by myself. got better games to play now. but you can count me as active when you need a crew
