The Superbowl (Gen fic) (5)

The Superbowl
Everyone’s favorite mercs have a television, so I figured they’d be watching the Superbowl!
(Set in modern AU) Gen fic. First fic, but I’ve been lurking so…. read anyway please. I’m posting this here, and not ff.net because I want actual constructive criticism, so please do. Drabble: 376 words.

Scout is not your average Patriots fan.

Scout is a rabid, proud, brutal, lethal Patriots fan.

So this bright Sunday morning, while everyone else was slowly dragging their bodies from their warm covers to enjoy brunch a la Pyro, Scout was in the communal bathroom, lathering his face, and the upper half of his body, in true blue and pure white body paint.

As the Engie mediates the morning fights between Soldier and anyone (everyone) who disagrees with Soldier (this morning it is Spy, who is slippery enough to stay out of Solly’s hands, but just barely), Scout is pulling on his mismatched knee socks in white and blue, and his favorite Patriot cap.

And as everyone is making slowly their way to the common room to watch the game (with Pyro having made enough chips and guac to feed (quite literally) an army) Scout is already sitting in the perfect spot in the room for watching the television (a well worn brown couch) and nervously awaiting the pre-game show’s completion.

His eyes are glued to the screen as if hypnotized as the football players talk about their lives and the commentators revel in the darker and more troubled back stories.
The team would interrupt him, but no one cares quite as much as him for this game.

Soldier is from Wisconsin, and though he is a fan of football, it’s just not the same when it’s not the team you love, y’know?

And Engineer is a Texan, naturally he loves the sport, but bearing likeness to his helmet clad American counterpart, he doesn’t have a vested interest in either team, he merely looks forward to the sport.

Demo likes the pyrotechnics, and isn’t about to miss Madonna in the half-time show, Sniper and Medic are watching so that they can complain that this really isn’t football.

All of the European team members agree: This is hand-egg if anything.

Heavy likes the commercials and guacamole.

Spy likes making fun of the American team members, and you’d be surprised how many sarcastic comments can be made during the game.

Pyro is there too, sitting on the floor in front of the television, but no one can quite tell why, and he’s not particularly forthcoming with his reasoning.

Should I continue through opening ceremonies? Or abandon?

Please proceed, I'm interested in seeing how this will progress.

I'm listening.

I can't help but wonder why this has to be a "modern-AU" when they had the Superbowl in 1969. It was the Baltimore Colts vs the New York Jets, so the whole basis of this fic being "who's from where enjoying which teams" wouldn't be that much different than the 2012 Superbowl.

Just a thought. Seems a little forced to put them in an AU for the sake of a specific Superbowl.

"Continue," I tell you, as I stroke my imaginary beard in a reflective manner.

Interestingly enough, I've actually met quite a few Aussies who refer to European football as "soccer" much like Americans do. Not that every single Australian calls it that, but at least some do as far as I can tell. Don't know if Sniper would be in that minority or not, just figured it's a bit of a curious fact to know. Comparing the reactions I've gotten calling European football "soccer" it seems the Aussies are more understanding of the title than, say, Brits or Germans.
