Chapter 4: Into the Fray
"ALRIGHT FOLKS, YOU HEARD THE WOMAN, LINE UP FOR BATTLE! Truckie, take her to the armory and get her set into respawn! I expect grade A ass kicking, DO I MAKE MYSELF CLEAR!" Soldier barked. Engineer guided a confused Chell off to the respawn chamber.
"Alright, now if ya would be so kind as ta stand here ma'm, we can getcha in the system so ya don't die." At this Chells train of thought came to a screeching halt. Not die? She began shaking, was she being put back into stasis? She turned to run when a warm hand draped onto her shoulder. The humming of the machine suddenly faded away, all she could see, hear and feel was the mans kindness.
"Calm down miss, it aint gonna hurt, respawn just allows yer body ta be picked up off the battlefield and bring ya back ta life. I don't get how it fully works but its amazin' aint it?" he soothed. Bring her back to life? She sighed, thinking too much wouldn't help her out now, so she complied to the man and stepped on a gray pad. She nearly jumped when she saw the two metallic arms descend with a blue field inbetween them. The scanning process felt cold, she shivered slightly when the final scan had been made.
"Alright, that's done, now lets get ya suited up for battle." On the long walk to the armory he gave her a brief explanation of the situation. Capture the red suitcase and kill people. Death was only brief and during ceasefires no contact is to be made with the other team. Ok, she thought, I can do this, I've survived tests with worse consequences, how bad can war be when you never die?
Then a thought crossed her mind. What if SHE had a machine like that?
The thought quickly died as they reached the armory. Engie pulled a key out of his overalls and unlocked the steel door. Blue steel, of course.
Entering the room was intimidating, she had seen the turret production line and yet this room yielded more firepower than that. Its blue walls were line with shelves and endless kinds of weaponry, the bigger ones standing on the wall below them.
"Well, pick up some weapons and see whatcha like." His eyes briefly drifted down, "Those are some fancy lookin' boots," he commented. Chell disregarded the comment and went back to her weapon browsing. Every weapon that could had a blue mark or color. Did colors mean so much out here? How would she be reacted to wearing orange? She pushed the thought aside as she picked up a large handgun. She almost smiled, the weight in her hand was familiar.
Oh how she missed the device.
She sighed and decided to make a shooting gesture with her free hand at the Engineer. He nodded and pointed down a hallway to their left. "Shootin' range that way," he explained. Chell nodded and grabbed a few other weapons, a shotgun she could hold in one hand, a bowie knife and another handgun, identical to the first one.
She lumbered off into the shooting range and picked up the shotgun. She held it with her right hand and aimed at a red Spy cutout. A brief pull of the trigger, a deep exhale and the Spy was missing half of his left side. It startled her to shoot a gun and not see a blue or orange portal where she aimed.
"Atta girl! Nice shot Chell!" he praised. She turned away to resume target practice before Engie could see her smile.
God she hadn't smiled in what seemed like decades. It could have been, who knows how long stasis lasted.
She tried to hold both of the handguns after thoroughly practicing with the shotgun. No good, she couldn't hold them up enough to aim both of them at once. Then a thought crossed her mind. She dropped the gun in her left hand and grabbed the knife. She jumped over the shooting rail and began shooting and swinging at the targets like a madwoman.
It was fun. She needed to let out her anger, and mutilating these wooden cutouts was much better than knocking over turrets.
After she beheaded a Heavy cutout while shooting a Medic between the eyes she returned to the Engineer. They both had huge smiles plastered to their faces. Decidedly it was better to not have to keep hiding her brief flashes of emotion.
"Mission begins in 60 seconds," the voice boomed. Chell flinched but didn't shoot the cameras, just the ceiling. It was a start.
"Well, lets see if ya can fight as well out there as ya can in here." he chuckled before holding the door open for her. Chell nodded, a vague but understood thank you, and headed back down to the resupply room with Engie.
---------------
"'Ey, there's my little sunshine gal!" Scout snorted. Then he winced, damn that girl hit hard. Engie laughed and Soldier grinned with respect. The others payed little attention, but the thought amongst them was mutual. She'd better not fuck this up for us.
A loud siren rang and everybody ran out to the dusty field like a bat out of hell. Chell got a grip on her bearings and ran out to the field. She jumped off of the roof platform where Sniper was roosted, hearing a brief tut from him as she leaped. She pulled out her shotgun and knife just before she landed safely, earning her confused stares from the Demoman and Engineer before she flashed a grin and began running across the rickety wooden bridge at the incoming Reds.
"Little lass is gonna get 'erself killed like that boyo!" Demo shouted at the Engineer. He gave a brief chuckle before flatly stating, "She may not be a talker but she's got the killing instinct you need to survive around here." Demo looked back down the bridge to see she had already shot the enemy Soldier square in his chest and performed a roundhouse kick on a Spy attempting to backstab her. She pulled out her handgun and shot him three times before he slumped over, dead.
"..." Demo was speechless, this seemingly frail girl had just effortlessly taken down 2 enemies at once. She turned and headed to the enemy fort and leaned against the wall. A brief turn of her head into the base was all she needed to plot where to place her porta- Oh, right. She sighed before running in to shoot the confused Red Medic while he healed his Heavy. The larger man roared at the loss of his doctor and aimed his spinning minigun at her.
Her eyes went wide, she had to think. Then she smiled when she remembered something she had been told once.
At least you have that, you've got jumping on your side.
A quick gasp and she was running towards the nearest wall, she jumped sideways, and like she had hope, the springs on her boots bounced off the wall and propelled her behind her hulking enemy. She grasped her knife tightly and took a stab at the mans head. She may not have much knowledge about other humans but she was relatively sure that brains frowned upon being stabbed. The Heavy gave a brief "Vat da..." before falling forward.
---------------
When she reached the enemies underground she peeked into where she was told her goal was. She heard mechanical beeping. She stopped, her heart racing. Turrets. Why was SHE protecting the intel? Was this just an angry response to her leaving? A cold sinking feeling gripped her lungs, she couldn't breathe.
"Here come the test results..."
Chell couldn't contain her rage, she started sprinting into the room, she lept over a rocket the turret shot at her. Turrets have rockets now? The gunfire keeping her attached to reality by a few bullets now lodged in her shoulder. She jumped over the turret and stood behind it, knife and shotgun in hand. She slashed with all her might at wires on the neck of this new, strangely shaped turret before shooting its (4?) eyes. The thing exploded at that, hitting her with a few pieces of scrap metal before she heard a nearby shout.
"SENTRY DOWN!"
Reality flooded back into her, it wasn't a turret, the enemy Engineer made it. She turned to run but caught a glimpse of the glowing briefcase. She hastily put the maroon straps around her shoulders and began to run with all her might. The few wounds she had received on the way here hurt like a bitch yes, but it wasn't something she wasn't unfamiliar with. She headed up the slanted passageway and found herself facing the enemy Scout.
"Well hey babe, why don't ya put down that briefcase and come back with me to my ro-UNFF!" Her booted hammer kick might as well have been a shotgun blast to his stomach. Then there was one of course. Chell heard yelling and began to run back towards her base, a red grenade landing behind her. Perfect. She jumped again, the blast launching her next to her base.
She began running back down the sloped passageways. It was strange, they had nearly identical layouts, the two bases. She shrugged in her mind and began to use her last bit of strength to run towards the capture point.
"Victory."
She returned to the rec room and was startled to hear loud cheering. From everyone, except Scout who was muttering something about that she was stealing his job, until Demo nudged his ribs hard with an elbow and gave a half-hearted clap. She nodded at all of them, feeling uncomfortable as Heavy gave her a crushing slap on the back. "Leetle girl is amazing, da?" he roared. Soldier gave a speech about their new recruit, without referring to her as 'MAGGOT', which Engie confirmed as a sign of respect. Chell gave an awkward smile before leaving the room and heading to the showers.
-----------------------
As she started to turn the shower room handle a hand was placed on her shoulder. She turned to see a shrunken Blu Pyro suit and a thumbs up from her teams Pyro. She took it and gave a nod towards the strange man (?). She started to resume entering the shower room when she heard the sound of a mask being half removed and a feminine voice.
"Us girls have to stick together right?"
Chell immediately pivoted to turn around but Pyro was gone. She shook her head and entered the showers, careful to block off the door with a chair.
She took of her dirty clothes yet again, thankful that Blu had womans undergarments, held just in case they got a female recruit, in the lockers. She dropped her new jumpsuit and towel on a wooden bench before entering the blue tiled showers. The warmth and the steam were nice, but the best part, besides being clean, was hearing Scout try and open the door again. It was annoying, but she found it incredibly comical.
The water was turned off after a quick but thorough cleaning and she held up the jumpsuit. It looked a little small, but she had nothing else so she sat down and pushed her legs through the almost clingy rubber-like material. She was surprised, it fit her well, she put her arms in and zipped up. She looked good. There was something different than the normal Pyro suit though, instead of a fire symbol on the yellow arm band, it was the weighted companion cube. It closely resembled the black pictures like they had in Aperture.
She smiled, it warmed her heart, it was an ultimate show of acceptance. She would have cried, if it wasn't for Soldier banging on the door with his shovel. She sighed and removed the chair, watching the shovel go flying and leave a dent in a locker.
"THESE SHOWERS ARE FOR EVERYONE MAGGOT!" he yelled. Chell gave him a brief glance before rolling her eyes and returning to the rec room, putting her hair back into a ponytail as she did so.
It seemed rather festive in here, Demo was passing out acidic drinks that only he seemed able to swallow. He started giggling and tried to hand one to her without falling over. She held a hand up and shook her head before sitting on the couch next to Engie.
"Ya did incredible for ya first day Chell," he began, "we hadn't captured their intel for about a week, good thing you seem ta be a natural warrior." He chuckled. "And ah see Pyro gave ya a new suit... Those boots must be incredible, ya didn't even seem fazed when ya jumped from the roof!"
Chell smiled at this, practically glowing from all the praise. She glanced around, Soldier was in the showers, that she knew, Medic and Heavy were missing along with Spy, but that was probably normal for them. Scout was watching a baseball game on the TV, Demo was on the floor laughing and Sniper was playing poker with Pyro on the cheap fold out table. The room itself was a bit run down, the blue carpet was close to being gray and the wall had holes and various un-plastered spots from various sources. Probably a drunken Demo's doing, she thought.
-----------------
Dinner came and went again, Soldier made his 'World Famous' canned corn with burnt chicken. That was the first night Chell didn't eat like a starved animal. As she began to pick up her dishes, Medic spoke up.
"Frau Chell, remember you have ein medikal appointment, ja?" A quick sigh followed by a regretful nod was all she needed before she left the room.
---------------
The medical ward was intimidating enough, considering her first 'visit' was only a day or two ago, and she was strapped to the only examination table they had.
"Ah, Frau Chell, come in, give me ein moment und ve shall begin ze examination," he said, perhaps a bit to happily. He emphasized 'examination' by pulling on a pair of blue latex gloves, letting the ends retract with a satisfying slap.
He began by checking her vitals, pulse, respiratory rate, routine things to him really. Chell breathed deeply when his stethoscope moved around her chest and back. It was cold.
"Vell Frau Chell, it zeems you vere very undernourished und exhausted, you zeem to be doing better und your performance today speaks for itzelf, you are free to leave."
She nodded before retiring to her room.
Her sheets were replaced and the bed was made, she noticed. She sat down on her blue bed before picking up her companion cube. Why would she give it to her? How would it benefit her at all? It wasn't like it was ever much help, it was a cube. She thumbed over the heart facing her and felt it dip a bit... That's weird, it didn't have that when she tested with it... Curious, she pushed in where it dipped and felt it move. It began to beep and steam flooded from the face that was now retracting upwards. The side disappeared and left 3 items inside of it.
The first she had hardly noticed, it was a small candle with a half burnt wick. The second was a boxed home safety turret. Great, more memories. The third, oh how she missed the third.
She fell asleep, cradling the device in her arms as if it were a child.

Ok, so chapter 4 is done, Crit is welcomed blah blah blah, same stuff as usual.
