"Shit no-one cares about," is my stage acting coming through. Probably a more accurate way to put is, "Shit that people would love to care about, but can't care about as much as they would like to, because there's too much going on for them to care about all at once."
In my case, specifically, there were the bits with Jane and Tavish teaming up against a monster Soldier; Engineer and Soldier sorting out their relationship; Heavy dealing with his overprotective (for lack of a better word to describe the reasonable sentiment of not wanting your lover killed) instincts towards Medic—they’re all beautiful by their own merits. If they were their own stories, I’d certainly love to read them. But here, in this story, they don’t really feel that they belong, and they’re getting in-between me and the core of the story. If this were a completed, published novel, they’re the parts that I would skip over to get “the good parts.” Since it’s a work-in-progress and I don’t have anything to skip forward to, I take the time to read them. They’re certainly still enjoyable, once I’ve gotten over the disappointment of not getting to more of the parts I wanted to read, but I never do get over feeling like what I’m reading is more filler than it is actual story.

Anyway, no, I don’t think you should quit writing this story, and I don’t think anybody should ever rewrite a story unless they really want to.
I don’t think you should quit because, first of all, you’re this close to finishing, anyway, and as I said before, the good in this story outweighs the bad significantly. Really, It’s very entertaining story, and there are a lot of people (including myself!) who are eager to see the rest of it. It could be better, but, bloody hell, so could everything.
As for rewriting it… I suppose if we all had infinite amounts of spare time and patience to spend revising the same story over and over again, I would say this should be rewritten, but I assume you’re a human being, with bigger things to invest your eighty-some years of life on, and you’re probably tired of looking at this story anyway. So I want you to move on. It's better for you. You're not yet finished and already you've broadened your horizons; you entertained some people; got a few new tricks up your sleeve; got a few bad tricks out of your sleeve; sharpened your understanding of how a story works; and you got your balls hacked off by some asshole critic, so I’d say that this story’s serving its tour and coming back a decorated war hero. Now it's your job as drill sergeant to beat the innocence out of some other starry-eyed young plot bunny.
